There’s a dangerous kind of isolation that can happen when someone is struggling with their mental health.

And it’s not always physical isolation. In fact, a lot of times the person is surrounded by friends, family, coworkers, texts, notifications, obligations, and ten other kinds of noise. But when someone is in a real mental health crisis, none of that necessarily matters, because all they can see is the pain in front of them.

The crisis becomes the whole picture. It narrows their vision, distorts their thinking, and convinces them they’re alone. Or that they’re a burden. That no one would understand, or worse, that no one would care.

And that’s exactly why I created BehindYou.org.

The name came from a simple thought, years ago, that I’ve never been able to let go of.

When someone is in crisis, they’re usually completely locked in on whatever is hurting them right then and there. The pain, the fear, the shame, the hopelessness, the exhaustion…whatever it is…it’s the only thing they’re able to see directly in front of them.

So what they can’t see in that moment is everything behind them: the people who love them, the support available to them, and the professionals trained to help the resources that could guide them through the next hour, not just the next year.

That’s what BehindYou.org is meant to represent.

It’s the reminder that even when it doesn’t feel like it, support exists. People care. Help is there.

So what exactly is BehindYou.org?

I built (and am continuing to develop) BehindYou.org as a one-stop online resource for people in mental health crisis to find help quickly, clearly, and from anywhere in the world. With clickable links and numbers you can dial automatically from the website.

The goal was simple…remove as many barriers as possible between a struggling person and the support they need. Because when someone is spiraling, they don’t need a scavenger hunt, ten tabs open, vague advice, or a long inspirational speech.

They need a place they can go right now and get help immediately…that isn’t necessarily calling 911. Don’t get me wrong, “911” is a valuable and life-saving resource, especially when nothing else is available and in moments of extreme crisis, but being able to text a crisis line and talk to someone isn’t nearly as scary as “911” can feel. This is a safe space with real resources rooted in people that understand. This is about options.

Every time someone is lost to suicide, the people left behind so often say the same things:

“I wish they knew how many people cared.”
“I wish they had reached out.”

These words are so heartbreaking because they’re true. So many people loved far more than they realize. So many people have more support than they’re able to see in those darkest moments. But pain and crisis are convincing. Depression is convincing. It can make someone believe they are completely on their own even when that couldn’t be further from the truth and sounds almost silly to someone on the outside looking in.

So I wanted to create something that could serve as a real-world interruption to that lie. Not just another conversation about mental health, but a practical place people could turn to in the moment they need it most. A place that, in some small but hopefully meaningful way, says:

Before you give up, before you disappear further into this, before you believe that no one is there, please look again. I promise you we’re all behind you.”

If you’re in one of those moments and struggling right now, I’m not going to pretend a blog post solves that, but I will tell you this: the way you feel right now is not the full truth of your life. It’s a moment, even if it feels massive. And, most importantly, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

If speaking up feels impossible, if texting someone you know feels too hard, or if you don’t even know where to begin, start with one click.

Go to BehindYou.org – let it help you find the next step.

If this site can help even one person pause, turn around, and recognize that there are people and resources ready to stand with them, then it matters. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do for someone is make support easier to find before they even know they’ll need it.

So that’s the mission. That’s the heart behind all of this, and that’s why BehindYou.org exists.

Thank you.
